It is important to choose not only the right domain, but the best domain for your website. Finding the right domain can be a bit of a trick. Some people tell you a domain name does not really matter, but securing the proper domain name can be the lifeblood of your site. Here are a few tips when choosing a proper domain name:
- Memorable – finding a name that is easy to remember is very important. If you want people to come back to your site time and time again it is important to come up with a domain name that is easy to remember. Something like google.com, ebay.com or stamps.com are all easy to remember and it has helped each company build their brand.
- Easy to Spell – I once had a friend who was starting up a jewelery business. He wanted the name to have jewelery in it. I kindly suggested to shorten the name as that word is fairly difficult to spell. The same thing with your site. If you have something that is hard to spell think about alternative words, or dropping the difficult words out to make it easier for your users.
- Short and Sweet – on the web shorter is sweeter. In this day and age of instant satisfaction, people do not want to remember or have to type a huge url into the browser like thisismyreallycoolwebsite.com. A better alternative if it were available would be coolsite.com. When you come up with a domain idea, see if there is something shorter and easier before making your final decision.
- Dot what? – some say the type of domain you purchase does not matter. Those people could not be more wrong. The first choice of anyone using the web should ALWAYS be .com. If you are set on using a specific name and .com is not available it is best to move along and find a name that you can get with .com in it. You dont want to lose business or even worse send business to your competition just because you are not able to secure the .com name.
- Whats in a Name – The name of your website can be very beneficial to you in the long run. If you have a name that people will search for in the search engines, you have a good chance of getting higher rankings and free traffic to your site. Think about your products and website content and then think about the terms people will be searching for. It may even be a good idea to create a few sites that act as landing pages that then link into your main site for individual products, services or information your site may have.
